Many people presume that having multiple or similar copies of the same page will either increase their rankings on the search engines or help them get multiple listings, due to the presence of more keywords. What they don’t realize is that duplicate content can make them suffer rankings and traffic loss.

The 2 most common types of duplicate content that we see nowadays are:

  • Identical Pages On Different Websites – Identical pages on different websites are considered duplicate and websites that are identical to another website are also considered to be spam. For example, associated sites which look and feel same and contain identical content are mainly at risk.
  • Scraped Content – Scraped content refers to taking content from a web site and making it look different.

Major issues with duplicate content include:

  1. Search engines Cant identify which version(s) to rank for query results
  2. Search engines don’t know which version(s) to include/exclude from their indices
  3. Search engines don’t know whether to direct the link metrics to one page, or keep it separated between multiple versions.

When search engine robots crawl a website, it reads and stores the information in its database. Then, it compares its findings to other information it has in its database. Based on a certain factors, such as the overall relevancy score of a website, it then determines which are duplicate content, and then filters out the pages or the websites that qualify as spam. Unfortunately, if your pages are not spam, but have enough similar content, they may still be regarded as spam
