Black SwanBlack Swan – Black Hat SEO

Black Swan, Darren Aronofsky’s dark and twisted film is really hard to compare to any facet of Online Marketing. But if we had to choose, we would have to compare it to Black Hat SEO. Techniques used in the past such as writing content with the same colour as the background and hiding keywords behind images are considered as Black Hat SEO. Now fearing a ban from Google’s Index, companies are advised not to use Black Hat SEO as it will ultimately ruin your website’s reputation and hurt site traffic.

The FighterThe Fighter – Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

I enjoy comparing Search Engine Optimization to The Fighter, more appropriately Micky Ward, because of the long-road he had to take to eventually become successful in his sport. Much is similar to SEO. Search Engine Optimization is a long process, but, if done correctly and if your campaign is focused on the right keywords, you should start to see your ranking on search engines increase. As your rankings increase, this provides your website with a greater chance at becoming successful. And who doesn’t like an underdog story?

Inception – Web Analytics

Every time you log into your web analytics and try to read the reports, are you a bit confused? Does it take a while for you to truly understand exactly what you’ve just seen? The same can be said for Christopher Nolan’s visually epic and mind-boggling film Inception. The movie leaves you with more questions after the film than you had going in. Much the same like Web Analytics. Your Analytics report provides you with a vast collection of statistics for your website, and if you know which statistics you should keep track of and which to monitor for future success, you will be less confused and know which questions to ask in the future. Personally, I think I’m still in a dream within a dream. But at least I know what a bounce rate is.

The Kids Are All RightThe Kids Are All Right – Blogging

Is the meaning behind this comparison because kids know what blogging is, and because of this, they are “all right”? Not exactly. Although, not entirely false. The film The Kids Are All Right follows a modern take on family, marriage, and appreciating everyone close to you. In terms of Online Marketing, Blogging allows your company to stay up-to-date with your customers, manufacturers and industry competitors. Blogging also provides newly updated content to your website, which helps in link-building and improving your PageRank. Blogging is not just for kids, they are for everyone, and especially ones looking to increase their presence online.

The Kings SpeechThe King’s Speech – Content Optimization

One of the Oscar front-runners enlightens us with a powerful story of an Australian speech therapist who aided Prince Albert , Duke of York, who becomes King George VI, with his (until recently, unknown) speech stammer. To learn more of the story, I suggest you see the film, but for my comparison of Online Marketing, I chose to compare this film to Content Optimization. In order for your website to see greater results with search engine traffic, your goal should be to have a strong PageRank. In order to achieve a medium-to-good Page Rank you must have strong and relatable content on your website. If your Meta titles and descriptions provide a detailed summary of your website, they are useless unless the site has content on the page which coincides with the Meta tags. The film describes the king’s struggles to speak in the run-up to his coronation and the start of World War II. Bring in a confident speech therapist and the king begins to get his voice back. If your page is not ranking where you want it to be, review the content on your website and learn to optimize your website for search engines by focusing on the right keywords for your business, insert the keywords in relatable text to your business and you should start seeing greater results in the rankings.

127 Hours127 Hours – PPC Campaigns

There haven’t been many “over-coming adversity” stories in Online Marketing, so it was a bit difficult to compare the movie 127 Hours to anything. However, with some quick math, we find that 127 hours is also 5.3 days. 5.3 days is not a long period of time in the world of Online Marketing. But it does provide a test period for PPC Campaigns. Pay per click (PPC) is an internet advertising model used on websites, where advertisers pay their host only when the ad is clicked. With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Content sites commonly charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system. In order to value which keywords are the most beneficial for your site, a test period of …5.3 days should provide you with the information on how to strategically organize your PPC campaigns so they can be successful in creating conversions.

The Social NetworkThe Social Network – Hmm, self explanatory

If you have seen the movie (even if you haven’t) or if you are familiar with this thing called the Internet, you are aware of Facebook. You should also be aware of the true value of the social network. Many companies today have Facebook pages for their customers to stay up-to-date with all things happening on a day-to-day basis. Mark Zuckerberg’s goal with Facebook was to make something cool, but also something that connects everyone in the world in one place. As of today, there are over 700 million users on Facebook. Facebook would be the 3rd largest country on our planet.

Toy Story 3Toy Story 3 – Website Design

Ahh Pixar. Is there anything you can’t do? Even with two sequels added to their original hit, they have yet again garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. For comparison reasons only, I will say that people flock to the theatres to see a Pixar film mainly because of the stunning visuals of their animation. I’d also be lying if I said they didn’t care about their stories. Nevertheless, Pixar’s animation is still far beyond their competitors and it is one reason why they are so successful. This aspect can be compared to Website Design. A great website is one that draws the visitor in. Sure it’s good to have proper content and information explaining what your company does, but if you want your visitors to stay, your site will have a better chance if it is visually appealing. If your visitors like the way your site looks they will be inclined to view more pages on your site and thus providing a greater chance at conversions.

True GritTrue Grit – Affiliate Marketing

The Coen Brothers’ Western remake of a girl searching for her father’s murderer with the help of a slack-jawed U.S. Marshall played by Jeff Bridges can be related in the world of Online Marketing to Affiliate Marketing. In order for Mattie to find her father’s killer she inquires the aid of a U.S. Marshall along with a few other characters throughout the movie. I have no desire for spoilers so I’ll move to the comparison. For Mattie to be successful she needed the aid of a more experienced person. The same can be said with Affiliate Marketing. Affiliate marketing allows other websites to take on the role of a “sales person” on behalf of your products or services. Those sites will advocate for your company and increase your organization’s exposure. In turn, their pre-qualified leads will be encouraged to enter your website, drawing dozens, if not hundreds of new visitors to your site every day. The more affiliates you have, the more business you’ll bring in!

Winters BoneWinter’s Bone – Keyword Research

The hit of last year’s Sundance Film Festival has received the highest recognition yet for this low-budget film, by receiving the nomination for Best Motion Picture at the 2011 Academy Awards. The film explores the interrelated themes of close and distant family ties, the power and speed of gossip, patriarchy, self-sufficiency, and rural poverty in the Ozarks. By far, this was the hardest film to compare against. Ultimately, I chose to compare the film to one of the most important aspects of Online Marketing; Keyword Research. Similar to Mattie in True Grit – who was also searching for someone – the main character in Winter’s Bone does all her searching on her own. She is powerful, self-sufficient and also relied upon from her younger family members. The same can be said for Keyword Research. Sure there are great tools provided online to aid in researching which keywords your website should be ranking for, but it is up to the company to thoroughly conduct this research to ensure they are ranked for the best keywords that will drive traffic and lead to sales.

And the Oscar goes to…
