Alright, I hope the first part was an informative read. Find out other important SEO on page ranking factors below:

3. Meta Description Tag/ Meta Keyword Tag: The next set of Meta tags are the Description and Keyword tags (Stated in order of importance).

  • Meta Description Tag: Somewhat Important
  • Meta Keyword Tag: NOT IMPORTANT

An example of the Meta Description Tag in Google is shown Below:

Now, Google has the right to display either the meta description tag on a SERP (Search Engine Results Page) or the content of your webpage as a description. The choice to display either content or description depends on the relevance of your webpages description to the individuals search query.

The Meta Keyword Tag does not appear on a SERP. The only incidence of the Meta Keyword Tag is in the source code of your website.  The reason why this tag is not given any importance is as back in the day webmasters used to unethically use the tag to rank their web pages for keywords that did not relate to their site.

DO NOT’s: Try not to Crowd the Meta Description tag with keywords as this tag only gets shown to a searcher based on the relevance of the keyword to your page. As this tag often appears on a SERP, make sure that you have some decent promotional text about your company’s products/services. Also, don’t waste your time filling in a million keywords in the meta keyword tag as this tag has absolutely no relevance and you might as well spend this time submitting your website to an online directory.

4. Header Tag Optimization: Header tags are to put it in simple words, topics of your webpage. For example: If your webpage is created around the topic: Australian Shoe Companies, then your header tag should be AUSTRALIAN SHOE COMPANY. Google places importance on the header tags places on a specific page as this specific tag indicates what the page topic revolves around. Hence it is important to make sure that the keyword you select is embedded within the header tag.

An example of a header tag is shown below:

Note: Header tags are also divided in terms of importance of the Headings. There are H1 tags, H2 Tags, H3 tags and so on. Make sure that your H1 tag is the headline/topic of the page with the H2 and H3 tags being subsequent sections.

DO NOTS: The tendency to use keywords in Header Tags often impairs our vision of the content below the tag. Make sure that, using a keyword in the header tag does not distort the content of the page. For Example, if your header tag reads BUY PS3 GAMES FOR CHEAP (Keyword Being BUY PS3 GAMES), the content below on the page also has to speak about your website servicing the need for people buying cheap PS3 games. The content must not astray from the heading on your webpage.

5. Optimizing the ALT Attribute of images: Each image on a web page must also be optimized in order for search engines to index the image. To optimize an image, we have to provide a textual description to the image by filling in the alt attribute (alternative text) for the image. The Alt attribute provides a textual description to the image which can be read by a search engine. View example below:

6. Optimization of Page URL: Finally, the optimization of a web pages URL is also an important factor in ranking a webpage, especially as this URL is displayed on the SERP. The web pages URL can be embedded with a keyword to make the URL search engine friendly. This can be done in two ways:

a. Keyword used in TLD (Top Level Domain): It would be great if one could get a domain which reflects the main keyword they wish to advertise. For Example: if you sell cheap shoes, then having your website on the domain www.cheapshoes.com would definitely help your website to rank high for the keyword Cheap Shoes.

b. Keyword used on individual pages: Possessing a keyword rich domain may not exactly be your plan if your company’s name does not include the keyword you wish to market. In this instance you can change the name of the individual pages on your website. Continuing from the previous example, let’s say your websites name is www.example.com and you wish to advertise cheap shoes. Your best bet would be to create a webpage on your website which speaks about cheap shoes and name the URL  www.example.com/cheapshoes.html.

I hope these 6 points will help you realize the key elements on your webpage that need to be optimized in order for your webpage to rank well on the search engine.  Note that these are not the only On Page elements that need to be enhanced for optimal performance. There are many other tweaks you can make to your webpage but according to me, these elements are the most important in terms of On Page optimization.
